Finding a quality DJ in Hawaii is not an easy task. Often times, clients who are searching for quality DJs on the Hawaiian Islands do not actually live in Hawaii. In fact, we have found that more than half of those seeking DJ services live thousands of miles away. Hawaii is a perfect destination for your wedding, birthday, spring break party, and more. So what should you look out for when selecting a quality DJ company in Hawaii?
To help us sort this out, I sat down with Glenn, one of the owners of Hawaii Sound & Vision, to get some honest advice on the subject.
A: When we first came to Hawaii, it was apparent right away that the laid back culture of Hawaii was pervasive in this industry. After speaking with many of the DJs in Hawaii, we found that more often than not, DJing was a hobby to these people. Many considered it a weekend job; something to do in their spare time. Clients should pay close attention to the level of detail that is put into the company products. For example, we have noticed a correlation between quality of the DJ's website and the quality of their product. The reality is that for most of the DJs we've interacted with, the amount of quality they are willing to invest in their website actually does indicate their commitment to quality elsewhere. There are exceptions to this, but by-and-large we have found this to be true.
We also noticed a lack of options when it came to DJ companies in Hawaii. We like to encourage clients to be mindful of this as they search, but never let this deter them from seeking a DJ of quality. While the options aren't plentiful, there are definitely good options out there.
On the flip side, we did notice that the majority of DJs in Hawaii were actually family owned and operated. There is definitely a positive to the personal service a family business can offer a client that is hard to replicate in large corporate environments. As owner of a family business myself, I believe in this philosophy whole-heartedly.
A: We were pretty surprised to find a lack of full service options in Hawaii. Most DJs in Hawaii only offered music services like genre specializations and mixing capabilities, and neglected the larger demand for all-inclusive-services that most clients expect in recent times. Before starting up in Hawaii we had over 20 years of experience as owner / operators of one of the largest DJ and AV companies in southern California. It became clear that over time, clients demanded more services for better prices. The demand for full service options like event coordination, emcee services, music design services, and video services (just to name a few) became more and more the expectation rather than the exception.
A: Go into the search knowing what you want. Having a solid vision is the best way to ensure satisfaction in the end. Are you looking for a full service DJ who handles more than basic mixing, or is a simple self-service iPod station what you're really after? I encourage all clients to know what they want, and to ask questions. Never be afraid to really challenge a prospective DJ company with pointed questions about their satisfaction rates, track records, service offerings, and more. Not only will you be able to refine your own vision, but you can also dismiss certain companies that don't offer excellent customer service up front.
A: This question is near and dear to my heart because many are simply unaware that that there are major differences between the DJs in terms of style. Many believe there is very little difference between DJs except for the price. Unfortunately, the fact is that each DJ is going to provide a vastly different experience.
For this reason, at Hawaii Sound & Vision, we like to refer to our "DJs" as music designers. We think of ourselves as in a different category than the rest because we love to mold our services and personalities to fit the client's vision. Regardless of who you choose for your DJ, make sure you take the time understand fully the style that DJ offers.
A: The biggest difference is that we do not exist for hobby. Unlike other DJ companies in Hawaii, our music designers are working full time, seven-days per week, and are virtually always available for free consultation.
